COMPUTER LAB

Welcome to the Computer Lab at Sacred Heart School.

In our lab, we are fortunate to have 15+ computers which we use for all sorts of projects, as well as a state-of-the art interactive whiteboard and projector.   Each of our grades meets weekly with me, and the lab is also used by other teachers throughout the week, as it fits into their lesson plans.

This year in our lab, you will see students using various software products for many projects.

In Kindergarten and First Grade, we generally use software to reinforce academic skills, while working with computer skills such as point-and-click and mouse control, which helps the development of students' fine motor skills.

In the Second through Fifth Grades, we stress computer-aided research and information gathering skills, using Microsoft Word or PowerPoint as the presentation format.

In Sixth and Seventh Grades, we delve into using Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint in preparation for future projects.  This year in Eighth Grade, we will be playing the "Stock Market Game" along with many other participants in Pennsylvania.

While we do some projects "just for fun", the majority of our projects directly relate to the classroom curriculum at the time, adding technology to all aspects of curriculum development.

Our Philosophy

Our desire is that each student in our school, as well as each staff member, will get an appreciation of the power of technology in their lives in the present and the future.  I want the Computer Lab to be a "fun" experience … my hope is that everyone who visits our lab will leave the room having one more piece of knowledge than he had when he entered, and that technology will facilitate their learning.

Classroom Rules

As in all our classrooms at Sacred Heart, there are a basic set of rules to which we must adhere:

  • Respect is of the utmost importance

  • Come prepared with all materials … no excuses

  • Refrain from speaking out-of-turn

  • Clean up your lab station in preparation for the next student

  • Never ask "Is this enough …"

Because of the nature of the lab, we must also add a few additional rules:

  • The Internet will ONLY be used to search for information pertaining to the classroom lesson.  There will be zero tolerance for any student who uses the Internet to access inappropriate or disrespectful information (documents, pictures, etc.)

  • Chairs should always be returned under the desks when exiting, and should NEVER be used as a "transportation device".

  • The Computer Lab should always be kept locked
