CURRICULUM (Continued)

SHS by Grade

Foreign Language

Our introductory foreign language program seeks to provide students in Grades Three through Eight a beginner's knowledge of languages.  German is the focus of Grades Three and Four, French in Grades Five and Six, and Spanish in Seven and Eight.  In addition, discussion of some Latin vocabulary and phrases are covered in our Seventh and Eighth Grade Religion curriculum.

Music

Music is a language of its own. It knows no boundaries. Under the leadership of our music instructor, our students are exposed to various songs, which enhance their joy and appreciation of singing. Students in Grades Six through Eight are introduced to various styles of music, their composers, and historical influences.  Students in Grades Four through Eight have the additional option of registering for instrumental lessons, which are provided by outside instructors who teach at our school on a weekly basis.

Physical Education

Our PE instructor weekly provides a wide variety of age-appropriate activities for Grades Kindergarten through Eight. Good sportsmanship and mutual respect are the cornerstones of our program. Many of our students earn yearly recognition in the Presidential Physical Fitness Awards.

Library

Our students' schedules include weekly visits to the library. Our librarian models a natural love of books, through oral reading and suggestions for independent reading. Activities include working with the Dewey Decimal System and practice with various resource techniques.

Art

Our highly creative art instructors lead our students in working with a multitude of art forms. Self-expression and creativity are quite evident and appreciated school-wide in the ongoing displays of activities.   The students are able to incorporate creativity into their individual activities and projects, which are often integrated with the classroom curriculum.

Computers

Our computer lab consists of 18 workstations. Our students enjoy/benefit from access to a multitude of software programs and resource web sites, including the Internet. Each of our classrooms is also equipped with Internet access for its computers. Our computer program is fully integrated across the curriculum and is used as a teaching tool in grades Kindergarten through Eight.
