EIGHTH GRADE

Welcome to the Eighth Grade SHS Classroom Site.  Your editor and the classroom teacher is Mrs. Helen Browne.  Thank you for reading all about us where the students are young adolescents searching for their identity and place in this world.  My goals are to do my best to teach my students new knowledge and skills everyday; to be a good role model as a teacher and Christian; to pass my sincere belief in my Church.

My Philosophy

My philosophy is: first, to follow The Two Great Commandments given to us by Jesus in the New Testament, Mark Chapter 12:  "Love the Lord your God with all of your heart, with all of your soul, with all of your mind, and with all of your strength.  And love your neighbor as yourself."  Second favorite philosophical note;" Do onto others as you would have them do to you".

Classroom Rules

God says; I have called you by name, you are mine …

You are precious and beautiful, and I love you.

Love is shown by signs of respect.

Speak with respect--mouth, body, writing

Treat others as you would like to be treated.  If you feel that something is unjust, ask to speak with the teacher later or after school.  We need to show respect to everyone.

Hands with respect

Keep you hands to yourself--even in fun!  We sometimes do not know our own strength.

Respect property--one's own and others'

Never go in another's desk, school bag, etc.  Use all books carefully, especially library books and school books.

Respect with gratitude

Say thank you for anything special.

Respect for learning

We are quiet in class and in the hallways out of respect.  We raise our hand to answer or ask a questions.  We do neat work, and we do our work on time.

We respect each other.

Curriculum and Homework

French 6

In French, - to become acquainted with the language, culture, and customs of the French people.

Religion 8

The 8th grade text, This is Our Faith, takes your child on a journey toward a deeper understanding of our Catholic beliefs and traditions.  It is hoped that each one realizes God's creative presence in the world and in life's experiences.  Scriptural reading of both the Old and New Testaments, the Basic Catechism, personal reflection, and prayer are the means for faith development.

Science 6, 7, and 8

On each grade level, the pertinent Diocesan guidelines are followed.  Daily work is centered on core material, basic knowledge of each chapter's objectives, enrichment, reinforcement, and assessment.  Critical thinking and problem solving are the methods used as well as investigation and experimentation.  It is important to note that there is homework every night, which is the review of material covered in class.

Music 6, 7, and 8

Music appreciation and music theory are taught in the upper grades.  This year's focus is the Classical, Romantic Music from 1750 to 1910.  Composers, such as Tchaikovsky, Rimsky-Korsakov and Rachmaninoff will be studied through biographical research and musical recordings.  A deeper understanding and
