SECOND GRADE (Continued)

2nd Grade Highlights

For All Saints Day, the children will give a "first person" report dressed as their saint.  They also participate in a special way at Mass.

The Pizza Hut Book-It Program encourages children to read.  They complete different projects, culminating in a class Pizza party.

One of our projects is a dress up biography book report.

We celebrate major holidays with a snack and appropriate video.

We meet once a month with our eighth grade prayer partners for prayer and a craft.

We visit Jacobsburg Environmental Center and see a play at DeSales University.

Charity events include a classroom "yard sale" and Alex's Lemonade Stand.

United with our fellow second graders in the public school we celebrate God's forgiveness and loving mercy in the sacrament of Penance followed by a reception in the auditorium.  In addition, we have a parish-wide First Communion retreat and celebrate First Holy Communion in May.

Homework

Homework will reinforce learning in the classroom and help to develop good study habits.  The children should be able to complete their homework with minimum parent involvement.  At the second grade level, written homework should take approximately twenty minutes to complete.  Parents should sign the daily homework sheet to indicate that they have checked to see that the homework was completed.  If a child has not completed daily seatwork, that also is considered homework for that day.

A Little About Me

My name is Phyllis Spencer. I consider teaching a rewarding career.  I enjoy seeing the progress the children make from September to June.  Each class is different and every day brings new rewards and challenges.  After teaching for many years, there are always new ideas and different methods I'd like to try with my class.   I used to say that I try to be the kind of teacher I'd want my own children to have.  Now I can say that I try to be the kind of teacher I'd want my grandson to have!

I am an outdoor enthusiast.  I especially love the beach and the mountains.  I enjoy biking, kayaking, and cross-country skiing.

I have been married for thirty years and have three grown children.
