Curriculum Religion 6 This year in religion class sixth grade will study the roots of our faith found in the Old Testament. They will move towards a deeper understanding of our religious beliefs and traditions and of the truths that are revealed to us in the Bible. A study of morality is also interwoven into the textbooks. Grades will be based on projects, occasional quizzes, homework, class participation and chapter tests. All tests will be announced in advanced. Reading 6 Skill and strategies for reading will be developed using various literary selections in the reading book. Students will be required to follow a copybook standard for vocabulary and selection questions. Narrative, informative, and persuasive writing, along with various poetry writings will be integrated with reading. Grades will be based on copybook, tests, class work, homework, projects, and book reports. English 7 & 8 Skills and concepts in grammar will be taught throughout the year. Students will continue to work on building a strong foundation and clear understanding of the grammar taught. Tests will be given intermittently to measure how well the students are grasping the material. Since students need to become more comfortable expressing their thoughts in writing, various writing assignments will be given throughout the year. Many of the writing assignments will be integrated with Literature. Writing will be graded on different elements using rubrics. Some exciting activities we will do: - American Fleet Association Patriotic Essay contest - "Right of Life" essay - Construct articles of a kids "Mini Page" - Oral presentations - Express Times spelling Bee - Anthology of Poetry for Young Writers - Read novels in Literature circles - Research projects - Book reports Literature 7 & 8 The emphasis in literature class is on the reading and appreciation of literature. Students are exposed to both traditional and contemporary literary selections as well as various literary elements through the reading of short stories, non-fiction pieces, drama, poetry, myths, fables, and novels. Grades will be based on participation, tests of selected stories, writing assignments, projects, book reports, and homework. Spelling/Vocabulary Workshop 7 & 8 The Vocabulary Workshop book is used to guide vocabulary growth in the student as well as to review spelling skills and rules. Students are expected to know both the spelling and the meaning of each word. The ultimate goal is for the students to be use the words in both their written and oral expressions. We will work on each unit for two weeks. Students will have homework daily in this subject and will be given a schedule indicating the day's assignments are due. Grades will be based on spelling tests, vocabulary tests, and daily homework. Spanish 7 Spanish class will include an introduction to basic words and phrases. Students will also study and research the cultures of various Spanish-speaking countries. Grades will be based on participation, quizzes, and individual and group projects. |
