Curriculum Science Science is a major subject as of Third Grade. Students will have a textbook and a copybook for notes and other important papers. The Third Grade science curriculum is divided into 4 sections: Life Science, Physical Science, Earth Science, and Health and Safety. Hands-on experiences are used to compliment the lesson, to provide examples to visual learners, and to encourage critical thinking in the scientific process. Math The development of Math skills continues in Third Grade with the mastery of the multiplication facts and then using them to learn the concept of division. Students will use larger numbers to grasp place value, rounding, addition, and subtraction. Time and money highlight the skills of finding elapsed time and making change. Students will explore customary and metric measurement and geometry. Problem solving skills are honed with the problem of the day. By the end of third grade, students are finding the product of 4 digits by 1-digit factors and using long division to find quotients. Religion Each day begins with our Religion lesson. During the course of the year we study the Marks of the Catholic Church, the Blessed Trinity, the Sacraments, prayer, the Ten Commandments, Holy Scripture, Saints, feast days, and holy days. Social Studies Like Science, Social Studies is a major subject in Third Grade. Much attention is given to developing map-reading skills and becoming familiar with our world using maps and globes. The concentration of the curriculum is communities past, present, and future. Students learn about people, places, and things that make communities special places to live in and visit. Language Arts Many subjects are covered under the Language Arts umbrella. Firstly, students work on a new Spelling lesson each week. Words are tested on Friday and sentence dictation challenges the correct use of spelling the words when used in a sentence. Reading is taught in leveled groups. Students learn skills like inference, drawing conclusions, long word decoding, making predictions, and cause and effect. Stories are read each week for comprehension and enjoyment. A daily Phonics lesson is also a part of the reading curriculum. Finally, in English students are taught grammar skills, mechanics, written communication, oral communication, and literature. |
