Welcome to Third Grade at Sacred Heart School.
Religion
Each day begins with a daily liturgy that includes the Gospel reading for the day and the children’s petitions. Following this is the regular religion lesson for the day. During the course of the year we study the Marks of the Catholic Church, the Blessed Trinity, the Sacraments, prayer, the Ten Commandments, Holy Scripture, Saints, feast days, and holy days.
Math
The development of Math skills continues in Third Grade with the mastery of the basic multiplication facts, which are then used to multiply and divide larger numbers. Students will use larger numbers to grasp place value, rounding, addition, and subtraction. Time and money highlight the skills of finding elapsed time and making change. Students will explore customary and metric measurement, geometry, fractions, and problem solving. By the end of third grade, students are finding the product of 4 digits by 1-digit factors and using long division to find quotients.
Science
Science is a major subject as of Third Grade. Students will have a textbook and a copybook for notes and other important papers.
The Third Grade science curriculum is divided into 4 sections: Life Science, Physical Science, Earth Science, and Health and Safety. Hands-on experiences are used to complement the lesson, to provide examples to visual learners, and to encourage critical thinking in the scientific process.
Social Studies
Like Science, Social Studies is a major subject in Third Grade. Much attention is given to developing map-reading skills and becoming familiar with our world using maps and globes. The concentration of the curriculum is communities past, present, and future. Students learn about people, places, and things that make communities special places to live in and visit. Special units of study include the geography and culture of Mexico, the First Thanksgiving, Harriet Tubman, and economics.
Language Arts
In Spelling, the children examine new patterns each week are encouraged to spell these words correctly in all writing assignments. Weekly tests are given each Friday.
Reading includes time for read-aloud, independent reading, and guided reading in small groups. Students practice making inferences and predictions, drawing conclusions, and identifying main ideas, cause and effect, characters and setting.
In English students study grammar and have many opportunities to use these skills in the context of writing.
